Why Have I Suddenly Got a Belly in Menopause?
Oct 12, 2026"Your shape can change during menopause even without a dramatic change on the scales. Train and eat for the whole body, not one stubborn area."
- Danielle Frost
You step on the scales and your weight hasn’t changed that dramatically.
But your clothes fit differently.
Your waist has disappeared.
And you suddenly seem to be carrying weight around your middle that was never there before.
Sound familiar?
Many women notice that the place they carry fat changes around menopause. Someone who has always carried relatively little around her middle can suddenly feel softer or thicker around the waist and think:
Where on earth did that come from?
The evidence supports that this is not simply imagined.
While ageing appears to account for much of the increase in total body fat across midlife, the hormonal changes around menopause are associated with a greater tendency to store fat centrally, around the abdomen.
That does not mean “menopause belly” is inevitable or that it cannot change.
It also does not mean hundreds of sit-ups will remove it.
We cannot choose where the body takes fat from first.
The useful levers are still the big ones:
Resistance training.
Regular daily movement.
Enough protein.
A sustainable overall food intake.
Sleep.
And habits you can actually maintain.
The mistake is thinking the answer must be a special menopause diet or a particular abdominal exercise.
Your body may be changing, but the fundamentals still matter.
